Garden Design Process
1. Understanding You and Your Garden
Every project begins with a site visit. This allows me to experience the character of your home, garden and most importantly, to get to know you. We discuss how you want to use your garden, what inspires you, and any practical considerations. Building this relationship helps ensure the final design truly works for your lifestyle.
2. Site Survey and Analysis
Once the design fee is agreed, the garden is accurately measured or a topographical survey is commissioned where required. This survey records all existing features and critical spot heights, allowing us to fully understand levels, drainage, and constraints before design work begins.
3. Concept Design and Garden Zoning
The concept stage focuses on identifying and zoning the key areas of the garden. By clearly defining spaces such as areas to sit, entertain, or enjoy views, create a natural journey through the garden. Mood boards and visual references help establish atmosphere, planting style, and overall feel.
4. From Sketch to Masterplan
The approved concept is developed into a detailed, to-scale masterplan using Vectorworks (CAD software), drawn directly over the site survey. This precise plan forms the foundation for 3D visuals, construction details, and planting layouts. Levels from the survey are carefully integrated, with retaining walls, steps, and changes in level fully resolved at this stage.
This phase typically includes:
Masterplan
Construction drawings
Setting out plan
Specifications for materials and finishes
These documents ensure the design can be accurately priced and built exactly as intended.
5. Detailed Planting Design
With the layout agreed, we develop a planting scheme that brings structure, texture, and seasonal interest to the garden. Plant choices are tailored to your site, lifestyle, and preferred level of maintenance, supported by a planting plan, visual palette, and full plant schedule.
6. Build Support and Project Monitoring
During the build stage, I stay involved to help make sure the garden is built as planned. This can include visiting the site, checking how the work is progressing, and answering any design questions along the way. Being involved during construction helps avoid issues and supports a smooth build from start to finish.
7. Planting and Aftercare Guidance
Planting is the final step that brings the garden to life. Guidance is provided on ongoing care and maintenance, helping your garden establish well and continue to flourish for years to come.
